I never get any art stuff done in the current "studio" (i.e. my room where I also sleep, read, and watch TV) so I'm trying to find a nice space to set up a more studio-esque artcave. It will be my new lair for drawing, Lego, sculpting, electronics projects, and whatever else I try to dabble in.
I have 3 contenders vying to house my creative energies:

1) Older brother's old bedroom upstairs. This room is down the hall from my little brother's bedroom, and is in a constant state of unfinished renovation and repair (my older brother was very prone to destruction). It's about 15' square with an ~8' recessed space w/window poking out over the roof, and a walk-in closet that's currently housing a bunch of building supplies and older brother remnant junk. It's not very private, but it is spacious and carpeted. In the hall is a full bathroom, but as it's in the charge of my little brother the bathroom is filthy. It would be convenient to wash brushes or dump inky water, though.

2) Guest room downstairs. The guest room is smaller (about 12' square with a small closet jutting out), but has better natural lighting from eastern and southern windows. It's got laminate flooring and is across from a half-bath and the laundry room. It's also right next to our wireless router in case I set up a laptop in there. It's slightly less private than the upstairs room. This is also where I'm setting up my little aquarium.

3) Loft over the detached garage. The loft is not climate controlled like the main house, but does have a window-mount AC unit and a portable electric heater. It's about 10'x15' with walls that slope inwards from about 5' up to the ceiling. It has a double set of windows with an east-northeast exposure on one end and a door on the other end; natural lighting isn't very good but there are 2 sets of 2 fluorescent bulbs overhead that put out a lot of light. The floor is bare wood with a few big scraps of old carpet over most of it. Since it's totally unfurnished, I would only need to move stuff into it instead of take stuff out and displace things to other rooms. It's perfectly private and has more than enough room, but it has no running water nearby like the other two rooms. I like this one most of all for that privacy, but the lack of a faucet might just be a deal-breaker.

Thoughts?

Hey, hey! Vryko!

You gotta tell me where you learned to render figures so well!

I need to get better...

I started off trying to draw American style comics instead of anime/manga. Superheroes may be cheesy, but they tend to be well-rendered (in fact part of the reason for all that spandex is so the artist can churn out an easy nude figure without having to bother laying on folds of clothing). I've noticed in manga the focus is on stylization and turning out work rapidly to meet demand for print and also for rapid consumption (be read quickly), so there's more emphasis placed on having certain silhouettes put down on paper than the rendering within them. This gives Japanese commercial art a wide range of typified and stylized expressions almost to the point of making faces and characters out of hieroglyphs, but also frees them up to make lengthy manga with lots of establishing and mood-setting panels. In American comics there's less emphasis on that kind of overt image vocabulary and the art is more focused on dynamic figures themselves, a kind of pulp-fiction extension of the classical Western art tradition. At least that's the way I see it.
How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way was my art bible for years.
Dynamic Figure Drawing by Burne Hogarth is even more excellent, but more like a textbook.

NOW GIVE ME THE SECRETS OF YOUR EMOTING AND EXPRESSIONS!

Dude, I have no secrets outside of "my art sucks and I'll never make it as an artist."

Does that help?
